Adding natural moisturizing factors (NMFs) to a ceramide-based moisturizer can enhance hydration and skin health.Baldwin et al recently published the results of studies comparing NMF-containing formulations to ceramide-based creams without NMFs. Both creams and lotions containing NMFs outperformed the control (ceramide-based cream), demonstrating statistical significance after 10 days of treatment.Read the full paper: bit.ly/NMFStudyFollow #Skinsights to hear Hilary Baldwin, M.D., Medical Director at the Acne Treatment and Research Center in Brooklyn, NY, share her opinions on this research and its implications for your patients.Reference: Baldwin HE, Arrowitz C, Del Rosso J. Some children with eczema have flare-ups despite their parents’ best efforts. The urge to scratch itchy skin can be hard to fight, leading to wounds, infections, and compromised barrier function. Aquaphor® Children’s Itch Relief Ointment, featuring 1% hydrocortisone (anti-itch ointment), provides immediate and lasting itch relief from eczema flares and skin irritations. Since it contains quintessential Aquaphor ingredients, such as glycerin, panthenol, and petrolatum, you can expect it to help soothe, too. Remind parents about the importance of applying moisturizer with colloidal oatmeal (skin protectant) to eczema-prone skin after baths, going swimming, or playing outside, and advise them to keep Aquaphor Children’s Itch Relief Ointment on hand just in case. Skinsights: Head-to-head study shows natural moisturizing factor (NMF)-enriched formulas provide superior hydration vs ceramides alone. Many don’t know that NMFs are just as important as ceramides for optimal moisturization. While ceramides reduce transepidermal water loss, NMFs are vital in replenishing and maintaining the skin’s moisture. It is also a common misconception that creams are superior to lotions, as they typically have more lipids. However, in a study comparing a lotion containing NMFs and ceramides to a cream that only contained ceramides, the lotion significantly outperformed the cream. Read the head-to-head study: bit.ly/NMFStudySee why Hilary Baldwin, M.D., Medical Director at the Acne Treatment and Research Center in Brooklyn, NY, believes it is crucial for your patients to use a moisturizer formulated with both ceramides and NMFs. Even though eczema flare-ups are associated with the colder, drier months, triggers can occur at any time, including the summer. That’s why it’s important to include moisturizer in a daily routine to help manage this condition—and it’s part of the treatment guidelines. Reapplying a moisturizer after taking a bath, going swimming, or playing outside is an effective way your patients can help manage eczema while getting the best out of summertime. Products with ingredients like colloidal oatmeal (skin protectant) and licochalcone A, which are found in Eucerin® Eczema Relief Cream, can help soothe and protect while moisturizing and managing symptoms year-round.

Skinsights: Natural moisturizing factors (NMFs) are critical for maintaining the skin’s moisture balance.NMFs are a natural part of moisture homeostasis, but many patients and even some dermatologists might not know what they are, their role, and/or why they are important.Ceramides only address the deficiencies in skin barrier lipids, not the deficiencies in moisture-binding substances or the skin’s moisture status. NMFs are humectants that are vital in replenishing the skin’s moisture reservoir for optimal hydration. When used with ceramides, they create a complete therapeutic approach for dry skin. Incorporating a moisturizer formulated with NMFs into a daily skincare routine is a great way for your patients to keep their skin healthy and supple.See how the power of NMFs enhance moisturizers: bit.ly/BeyondCeramidesHilary Baldwin, M.D. at the Acne Treatment and Research Center in Brooklyn, NY, explains why your patients should be using quality moisturizers that contain both ceramides and NMFs.

Recent studies show that ceramides are not enough for optimal skin hydration. Ceramides only reinforce the barrier—natural moisturizing factors (NMFs) found in the epidermis act to draw, and hold onto, moisture into tissues. In a recent publication, Hilary Baldwin, M.D., Medical Director at the Acne Treatment and Research Center in Brooklyn, NY, and James Q. Del Rosso, DO, from the JDK Dermatology Research Center in Las Vegas, NV, review the evidence for enhanced hydration delivered by NMF-containing moisturizers. Explore the data in detail: bit.ly/BeyondCeramidesLater this month, Dr. Baldwin will share her recommendations and thoughts on incorporating NMFs into the skincare routine. #Skinsights

We had an exceptional time with at their National Conference in Albuquerque, NM, the weekend of June 27-30th. It was great to meet with old and new friends and share our support of families and individuals impacted by ichthyosis and related skin types. With over 300 total attendees, the conference was filled with motivational, practical, supportive, relaxing, and entertaining activities. As the Diamond Sponsor of the event, it was our privilege to provide travel scholarships to help this community come together. For some, it was a reunion, while for others, it was their first time meeting someone else with ichthyosis. As one attendee stated, “It was the first time I could let my guard down when I entered the room.” For further information or to become a physician in the FIRST referral network, please visit: bit.ly/FirstSkinFoundation

Summer has arrived, and people are spending a lot more time outdoors. According to a poll from the American Academy of Dermatology, some young adults don’t believe in the value of SPF. That’s why it’s imperative that your patients incorporate some sort of SPF product into their daily skincare routine. This UV Awareness Month, ensure your patients are aware of all types of sunlight, including visible light, which can lead to skin damage like hyperpigmentation. Recommending products that include iron oxides and antioxidants in their formulation will help protect your patients and mitigate its effects. Remind your patients of all skin types and tones to apply and reapply! Reference: Hopkins C. What Gen Z gets wrong about sunscreen. New York Times website: bit.ly/NYTSunscreen.
